CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“Are you going to tell me why you’re really here,” the librarian asked when we were alone.

“I’m looking for Ben. I want to help him find Anthony, and he said I could help with his research.” Although that was the truth, the librarian frowned as she picked up the first book from the floor.

“What is your name? I haven’t seen you here before.”

“Scarlet.”

“Ah. You’re the new dragon who caused all the havoc in LA two days ago. Do you know how difficult that was to put right? You made a dent in a popular park in one of the busiest cities in the world.”

I gritted my teeth. None of that had been deliberate, and I had only done it to save my life.

“I’m sure it wasn’t easy to put right,” I replied when she took the book from me and bent to pick up another. “I’m grateful that was done, but that’s not why I’m here. That happened while I was trying to figure out where Anthony is.”

The fierce woman just continued to pick up books, and I stooped to get another. She gently tucked them back onto the shelves, knowing where they went with a glance.

I collected them no faster than she could shelve them.

“You’d best be gone,” she said when there were only a few left to put away. “I can do the rest, and these aren’t the sort of books you should read. These are some of the most important books the library owns, and the information is sensitive.”

“I can’t leave,” I replied, fetching another book from the floor. “I really do need to see Ben. He asked me to come and find him, so here I am.”

“Ben knows trainees aren’t allowed in the main area of the library for their first week and not in the upper levels for several months.”

“That may be true, but he did ask me to come here and told me you could talk to him if you had a problem with it.” I shrugged.

“Ben doesn’t make the rules. I do. This is not a suitable area for someone who doesn’t understand our ways, and definitely not for someone so...reckless.”

“I’m pretty sure that Anthony, who is out there being hunted by multiple shadow catchers, doesn’t care about your rules right now. I can help him, and Ben knows that. I need to see him. Now!” My temper flared, and I clenched my fists and set my jaw. The books were forgotten.

The librarian didn’t budge. “This is a quiet space that deserves respect and care. You clearly aren’t ready to be here. I should have known a red dragon wouldn’t understand respect and follow the rules.” The librarian puffed out her chest and lifted her chin.

I sighed. I could go outside and try to get Ben to come to me. I grabbed the bag I’d shoved my stuff into, which had gone flying when I’d landed. The journal had slid out, so I quickly tucked it back inside.

“Wait,” the librarian called, coming over to me.
